-after Brezhnev there were two short term leaders in Russia
-Gorbachev took over in 1985
-began "developed socialism" (wanted to rid the USSR of corruption)
-had to change his ways in 1986 after the Chernobyl disaster
-anti alcohol campaign
-continued the Afghanistan invasion too long
-investment in machinery and tool industry with little return (cars in East Germany were too far behind the times)
-his high ranking officials were based on loyalty instead of honesty
-deficit grew too large to keep up with
